Analyse and act in the Duero-Douro corridor to improve the connectivity of biodiversity in the territory.
What is OET DURIUS?
The OET DURIUS project is being developed within the framework of the European cross-border cooperation programme Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027.
The project activities are carried out collaboratively between eight entities from Spain and Portugal: Fundación Santa María la Real, which coordinates the project; Asociación Ibérica de Municipios Ribereños del Duero (AIMRD), the cluster Hábitat Eficiente AEICE, the vice-rectorate for research and transfer of the University of Salamanca, Palombar – Associação de Conservação da Natureza e do Património Rural; Comunidade intermunicipal Do Douro and Comunidade intermunicipal Tras Os Montes (CIM-TTM) and the City Council of Zamora..
The OET_DURIUS activity is based on the analysis of the ecosystems around the Douro, the state of the connection between them and their natural connection points, in order to be able to select and mark, based on knowledge, places for action. The information gathered and its conclusions guide the implementation of small-scale renaturalisation actions in localities on both sides of the border, which will contribute to improving ecological connectivity in the Douro corridor..
This will enable an easily accessible digital platform to be set up, which will allow consultation, interaction and data updating, i.e. a CROSS-BORDER ECOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY will be created, which will be gradually expanded.
It will be developed in the three-year period 2024-2027, with an investment of 1,573,013 euros, 75% financed by the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 programme.

OBJECTIVES
To protect and conserve biodiversity in natural and rural areas and to enhance the natural ecosystems and the urban environment of the cross-border area through cooperation.
To define strategies for ecological connectivity and Green Infrastructure and innovative solutions adapted to the climate challenge that can be transferred to other parts of Europe, especially in those areas affected by demographic loss and the loss of traditional cultural landscapes..
Create a specific framework for the cross-border context and local scale, which generates a shared strategy and several action plans in the Douro-Douro corridor, a priority for biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula.

Create a cross-border monitoring observatory to protect and conserve the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and the urban environment.
Set up an instrument that collects the results of the project actions, and provides tools for decision making, creating the basis of a structure for good ecological governance of this territory, along the provinces of Valladolid, Zamora, Salamanca, Trás-os-Montes, Vila Real, Bragança and Alto Douro Vinhateiro.
ACTIVITIES
1. To create a set of rules for assessing green infrastructures at both regional and local level, specifically focused on the Duero-Douro corridor area and to achieve a homogeneous methodology for calculating and assessing the ecological quality of these territories.
a. Compile and homogenise the existing information.
b. Adaptation of green infrastructure methodologies to local areas.
c. Selecting indicators for the assessment and monitoring of a regional/local green infrastructure applicable to the Duero-Douro corridor.
2. Study and assessment of Green Infrastructure in cross-border territories based on the identification of ecosystem services, biodiversity and ecological connectivity.
a. Assessment and mapping of ecosystem services in cross-border territories.
b. Analyse ecological connectivity and assess the state of conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Duero-Douro corridor.
c. Integrate the results obtained in the previous activities and generate logical chains to establish inferences, cause-effect relationships, and identify patterns to arrive at solutions.
3. Set up the Cross-Border Ecological Observatory for the ecological assessment, monitoring and improvement of ecosystem services, biodiversity and ecological connectivity through a proposal for green infrastructures.
a. Draw up a catalogue of joint actions for conservation/restoration and prepare the bases for a cross-border action strategy.
b. To lay the foundations for joint work under a cross-border action strategy.
c. Design solutions to be implemented in the pilot cases that improve the valuation of the territory and that can be transferred to other territories, even countries.
d. Create the Cross-border Ecological Observatory for the Biodiversity of the Duero-Douro Corridor, a technological tool for research, for decision-making in the field of green infrastructure, a repository of alphanumeric and cartographic information that will provide a monitoring system.
4. Design and implement several pilot green infrastructure experiences on both sides of the border
a. Promote biodiversity and ecosystem services and green infrastructure on a regional scale, by improving the GR14 ‘La Senda del Duero’.
b. Recover elements of green infrastructure linked to the cultural landscapes and traditional activities of the Douro corridor.
c. Defragment human settlements and linear infrastructures. Towards a green infrastructure with true ecological coherence.
5. Communication, visibility and transparency of the project
a. Holding of 3 Seminars for the dissemination and communication of the project in order to achieve the objectives of informing/consulting/involving/collaborating with different audiences and participants.
b. Actions for the information, communication and dissemination of OET Durius
c. Elaboration of a Plan for Transfer, Exploitation and Capitalisation of results.
