Among the actions already carried out, a notable intervention took place in Parque do Juncal, in Mogadouro, where stone piles were built and nest boxes for birds, as well as an insect hotel, were installed.
Nest boxes play a key role in biodiversity conservation by providing safe shelter and breeding sites for various bird species in environments where natural nesting cavities are scarce or have disappeared. In turn, insect hotels offer refuge to pollinators and other beneficial insects, supporting their reproduction and contributing to essential ecosystem services such as the pollination of wild flora and the biological control of pests. These structures help improve the ecological quality of habitats and strengthen the natural balance of ecosystems.
These interventions are part of a broader nature conservation strategy that also encompasses areas within the municipality of Miranda do Douro, specifically territories included in the Natura 2000 Network and the Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve.
The work carried out aims to create better shelter, feeding, and breeding conditions for different species, while simultaneously enhancing ecosystem services such as pollination, biological pest control, and soil protection.
Through these actions, OET Durius reinforces its contribution to the enhancement of the Douro ecological corridor and the conservation of natural heritage, from a perspective of cross-border cooperation between Portugal and Spain.
